Celebrating the life and legacy of Tim McCoy

On Friday 10 November, passionate community lawyers and lifetime change makers attended the 33rd Anniversary Tim McCoy Memorial Dinner at Richmond Town Hall.

The Tim McCoy Memorial Dinner is hosted every year in honour of one of the early and notable members of the Community Legal Centre movement, Tim McCoy, who tragically passed away 33 years ago following an asthma attack. Tim is remembered to this day for his political activism and larrikin spirit, and for dedicating his life to a movement for social justice - a life too short.

On 16 October 2023, the Federation hosted the Community Legal Sector Annual Principal Lawyers Meeting in Melbourne. The all-day event included informative sessions on legal risk management, restorative justice responses to sexual violence, the role of the regulator, and influencing law reform. It was also an opportunity for Principal Lawyers to network with peers from other Community Legal Centres at an in-person event.

On Saturday 14 October 2023, Australians were asked to vote on whether to establish an Aboriginal Voice to Parliament, in what was considered by many as a referendum to define the nation. The Federation deeply regrets the defeat of this proposal, which represented an invitation to walk with Aboriginal people in a first step towards reconciliation.

The Federation turns 40

The Federation turns 40

On 12 October 2023, the Federation of Community Legal Centres turned 40. Originally the Legal Centres Working Group, the Federation was established to bring together representatives from Victorian Community Legal Centres to work on joint issues. Today, the Federation represents the 4,000+ staff and volunteers at Victoria’s 47 Community Legal Centres, and is the peak body behind a powerful movement for social change.
