Tranche two of Victoria’s bail laws spark grave concern across community organisations
Yesterday, the Victorian Government introduced the Bail Further Amendment Bill 2025 into Parliament, taking Victoria’s already extreme bail laws one step further. Under the proposed legislation, access to bail will be even more restricted, resulting in more unsentenced people on remand awaiting trial in Victoria’s already overstretched prisons.

Progress on victims’ compensation scheme shows the Victorian government is listening, but the job is not done yet
The Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme was introduced by the Victorian Government last year to replace the former Victims of Crime Administrative Tribunal and provide vital support for people recovering from acts of violence. Since commencing, there have been significant issues with the administration of the scheme, resulting in significant barriers for people who have experienced violent crime to access financial assistance to support their recovery.

Long-awaited reforms of intervention orders welcomed by community legal sector
The Victorian community legal sector supports many of the reforms to the family violence intervention order (FVIO) system, announced as part of the Women’s Safety Package yesterday. Community legal centres have long advocated for reform to the FVIO system, which can be slow to respond, difficult to navigate, and overly bureaucratic. We welcome the improvements outlined in the package, and look forward to receiving a more detailed outline of what the reforms will look like in practice.
