On the 10th of May 2018, the Federation of Community Legal Centres and key community partners held We Must Stand Together (WMST).
This forum brought together communities affected by the current law-and-order agenda in Victoria, community legal centres, social service organisations and NGOs to discuss and shape a collective response to systemic injustice and discrimination in the lead-up to the state election.
The aim of the event was to build strength, resilience and connections that will continue to develop through the election period and beyond. To do this, We Must Stand Together involved a mix of panel sessions, performances by poets and musicians, and practical skills workshops which prioritised the voices of people directly affected by experiences of racism and criminalisation.
This event brought together renowned voices from across Victoria together. We heard leading voices from First Nations communities, such as Tony Birch, Paola Bella, Indi Clarke and Meriki Onus. We heard from leaders in African-Australian and migrant communities, including from Nyadol Nyuon, Zione Walker-Nthenda, Santilla Chingaipe and Wani Frere.
We also heard about exciting campaign announcements from a range of organisations and groups who are gearing up to take action.
