Yesterday, representatives from Victoria’s community legal centres were joined by Attorney-General Kilkenny at a roundtable event, to explore evidence-based solutions for making Victoria a safer and fairer place.
The theme for this Attorney-General Roundtable was the collaborative nature of community legal sector work to support and advocate for clients navigating complex legal challenges across the breadth of the system.
During the session, representatives from six community legal centres presented two case studies to the Attorney-General that illustrated the complex, intersecting legal needs of clients, and the ways that community legal centres work together as part of a connected legal ecosystem that supports clients who are at risk of falling through the gaps.
The case studies demonstrated the breadth of the sector’s work, exploring how community legal centres partner to address issues including family violence, victim survivor misidentification, recovering from a disaster, seek redress following a crime, migration, infringements, intervention orders and employment.
We appreciated the Attorney-General’s deep understanding of the sector and empathy for the challenges communities face, that she demonstrated during the discussion that followed the presentation.
We heard that the Attorney-General shares many of our objectives, and recognises the value of community legal centres in supporting communities, and advising her and the broader parliament on policies and laws that bring to life our shared vision of a fair, safe and thriving Victoria.
We look forward to strengthening our relationship with Ms Kilkenny, and working even more closely with her office going forward.
