This framework was developed by Victorian community legal centres, with leadership from Eastern Community Legal Centre and the Federation, and the support of consultant Tammy Atkins in 2025 with funding from the Commonwealth Government.
In multidisciplinary practices, there are three distinct elements of governance that work together:
- strategic governance (boards making partnership direction decisions)
- operational governance (partnership management and coordination)
- and professional practice governance (ensuring professionals can meet their ethical obligations while collaborating).
Community legal centres from across Victoria participated in a detailed survey about their multidisciplinary practice governance experiences, challenges and needs. This framework captures what works, provides language for what is often unspoken, and offers practical guidance for persistent challenges relating to governance in multidisciplinary practice.
